Shawn's An American Carol Review

2008 Movie #153 - An American Carol

Speaking of movies with no redeeming qualities (which I was at the end of my last review in case you aren’t keeping up), here we have a great example of one. I was sure this was going to be one of the 2008 movies I missed (which wasn’t too upsetting) but the DVD is coming out and lucky me, I got to watch it. It isn’t Meet the Spartans or Disaster Movie bad, but it’s really fucking terrible.

I’m going to try and get through this review without too much political talk since well, I don’t want to get into that shit here. The movie is coming from a completely Conservative viewpoint though so it’s hard to not at least mention something about it. The movie is of course a huge, blatant rip on Michael Moore. Right there should be a warning since he has been made fun of for years now. This movie seems to think it’s doing something new though. Lots of jokes about he likes to eat and how he is fat. Wow, cutting fucking edge.

The movie also takes a firm standpoint that America is perfect in every single way and that criticizing it means you hate it. It also takes stabs at college education and so on. I can’t just can’t support the viewpoint of this movie (then again I’m Canadian too) so right there I can’t like it. It’s just so “yay America!” that by the end it’s fucking nauseating. We get it, you like your country and hate anyone who thinks it has flaws. STOP! STOP!!!!

I could maybe look past the go America go stuff if at least the movie was funny. Of course it isn’t. Oh god is it ever not funny. I can’t even accept that they thought they were making a funny movie during production. I smiled once at a cameo by Elaine’s boss from Seinfeld as himself, but that’s it. The rest of the humour is just pratfalls and bullshit you’ve seen be unfunny 1000 times before. There’s also a bizarre 9/11 reference that actually shows the smoldering remains of the two towers. This ranks as one of the most out of place moments I’ve ever seen in any movie. Then 10 seconds later the main character is hitting his head on bells…fuckin’ movie. There’s also a musical number that they try to justify by mocking the fact there is a musical number. It doesn’t work and that 3 minute stretch is just fucking death.

I can’t help but wonder what attracted this cast to the movie. They aren’t huge names but there are genuinely talented people in this thing. I guess maybe the Conservative agenda attracted them initially maybe. But then how did the terrible fucking script not drive them away immediately afterwards? I just don’t get it.

It has been an awful year for the parody movie. I can’t help but wonder, and hope, if this is the end of them. …oh god someone is going to try and remake Airplane aren’t they? I saw give it two years and that will either have happened or be in the process of happening. Mark my fucking words. In the meantime, stay far, far away from this crap. I look forward to talking about it again in a couple of days when it hold it’s place in the bottom 10 movies of 2008.
