2008 Movie #142 - Passengers
Man was this ever not the movie I thought it was going to be when I sat down to watch it. I knew very little about it aside from the cast. I actually thought it was a horror movie. Well, it isn’t…it really isn’t. It’s kind of a thriller, but I would describe it more as a drama than anything else. One thing is for sure, this movie has no real concrete reason for existing.
I can’t say the movie is terrible and I’m sure a lot of my hostility is because I was expecting something completely different from what I actually got. Even as a drama/thriller though, it’s not great and feels very, very generic. This is exactly the kind of movie I won’t even remember having seen in just a few months time.
The plot is pretty interesting at first. It sets up an interesting premise and doesn’t give out a whole lot of information in the beginning. It got me invested for a while I had genuine interest in what was actually happening. Then things get slow and you start to wonder if they forgot about the mystery that was set up in the first place. Then you get impatient and bored. Then you get all the answers. Then you get mad. Then the credits roll.
The final revelation of this movie just ridiculous. It’s the main reason I have to wonder why this movie got made. There can’t be a single person out there who hasn’t seen something similar done 100 times and it makes me curious what the makers of this movie were even thinking.
The acting is fine, with a lot of pretty well known actors showing up. It makes me wonder what it was that attracted all of these talented people to this script. It certainly couldn’t have been the story or the ending. So I don’t really get it.
I can’t recommend this one. It has a decent premise going for it and a pretty interesting first half, but everything just goes straight to hell in the second part, with an ending that will most likely just frustrate the piss out of you.
