2008 Movie #134 - Frost/Nixon
This is my first one of the recent slew of apparently Oscar worthy movies. I wasn’t familiar with the true story behind this movie, essentially all I knew was that it was a two hour movie that almost entirely consisted of 2 men having an interview. That’s not completely true. While the interview does take up a large part of the running time, a lot of the movies is focused on what is going on behind the scenes, as well as all of the events leading up to the interviews. Overall, it actually makes for a pretty compelling movie.
This movie could have ended up being very boring since really, there isn’t a whole lot going on. Somehow though they managed to find ways to keep the drama levels high and keep everything interesting and to make sure the viewer stays invested in the events taking place.
A lot of that has to do with the performances, which are across the board excellent. There has been a lot of talk about Frank Langella’s performance as Richard Nixon and after watching the movie I can understand why. He doesn’t really look anything like Nixon but he has the voice down and by the end of the movie you look past the appearance and he really does become the part. Michael Sheen also does a great job as David Frost, giving the character a lot of depth and making you root for him. The supporting cast is also great, with Kevin Bacon and Sam Rockwell being highlights.
The movie does drag a little in the middle part but it’s overall very engaging and entertaining. I don’t think I would ever watch it again but it’s definitely worth at least one viewing.
