Shawn's Resident Evil Degeneration Review

2008 Movie #130 - Resident Evil Degeneration

The first Resident Evil movie blew my fucking mind when I saw it the first time. I don't know if I was just in the right mood or what but I remember really enjoying the hell out of it. The second one was pretty bad, but somehow still entertaining for the most part. The third found a middle ground and was just pretty good. Now we have this one, a CGI animated movie much in the vein of Final Fantasy VII Advent Children, a movie I found kind of underwhelming.

This one sort of plays out like watching a very long cut scene from one of the Resident Evil games. The animation is pretty good, but nothing better than what you would see in the games themselves. It features Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield, which as a huge fan of the games is pretty cool to me. I think the storyline is supposed to take place after Resident Evil 4 but I'm not entirely sure about that.

The storyline is ok, pretty much the standard stuff you see in the games. Just stopping one of the viruses from getting loose. It's not a bad story, but there really isn't much to it. Then again the same thing can be said about the games too. There is a lot of action though, most of it pretty entertaining. Parts of the movie do drag but it's never boring.

The voice acting is not that good. I was hoping that if it was bad, maybe we would be lucky and get that over the top Resident Evil 1 acting ("You were almost a Jill Sandwich") but so such luck. We just get something in between that is mostly serviceable.

Similar to what I said in the My Name is Bruce review, your enjoyment of this completely stems from your enjoyment of the video game series. I am a huge fan of the video games and therefore I found a lot to like about this movie. It's pretty average overall, and not any better than the live action adaptations (except the second one of course), but it has highlights and I overall enjoyed it.
